These handcuffs are designed to assist the officer in quickly applying them to a prisoner. This is accomplished with a rather ingenious and somewhat tricky mechanism. Turning the key to the right unlocks the cuff so that the bow will swing in and out with no impediment. Swinging the bow the whole way out causes the bow to lock in place and the ratchet to engage. When the inside of the lock case (with the lever) is placed against a wrist and the small lever pressed down, the bow releases and snaps into the lock case. At this point the key can be inserted and turned to the left to double lock the cuff. The complicated mechanism is rather trouble prone.
